And how I ended up here
I’ve wanted to write for about twenty years. I got a taste for it when I started writing on forums during the early 2000s. I had one failed attempt to blog about 10 years ago, which I deleted in disgust because I hated it. Without the regular interaction from other participants, as had been my experience in forums, I felt as if I were talking into a void and so my writing became very stilted.
I also started to write a novel, which is somewhere in the bowels of my external drive. I gave up on it when I couldn’t decide where it was going and, reading it back to myself, it sounded like a cringeworthy school project.
I finally got going with writing on here two years ago. I fell onto Medium by chance — first, by reading. I found the topics very interesting and I thought it was professional journalism at first because the writing was of such a high standard.
When I realised it was a blogging platform for everyone, I took the plunge. I really like the interface. It is very user-friendly and looks really professional.
My background is in Modern Languages, although being partially deaf (and getting deafer year on year), my degree is about as useful to me as a chocolate teapot. So, I work in retail, which is also a pain in the butt if you are a bit deaf — shops are a very…
